Possessing one of the most inventive minds of the 20th century, George Nelson was the rare person who can envision what isn’t there yet. Nelson described his creative abilities as a series of “zaps” – flashes of inspiration and clarity that he turned into innovative design ideas. The Coconut chair Nelson designed the Coconut chair in 1955. The idea of sitting in a coconut slice may not initially seem appealing, but the chair is famed for being extremely comfortable. Nelson said he developed it “to give lounge seating comfort, together with great freedom of movement”. With its shallow sides and soft curves, the chair is designed to let you sit in any position and move with ease. It’s worth considering that as far as chairs go, few are as simple as the Coconut. It really has the appearance of one fluid gesture, which aside from the angularity of the seat’s edges and legs, gives it a quite elegant overall appearance. If you study its form as if it were sculpture, you see how balanced it is. As one moves around the chair, it moves with you, always submitting its supple curvilinear shapes, while simultaneously confounding the organic quality with a geometric rigor. It’s really a perfect chair. Material: Black leather seat, chrome legs. Dimensions: 40”W x 33”H Period: Designed in 1955
