Pair of Antique Italian Renaissance Revival Carved Oak Side Chairs, Late 19th–Early 20th Century

A striking pair of antique Italian oak side chairs dating to the late 19th or early 20th century, reflecting the Renaissance Revival tradition.

Each chair features an elaborate openwork backrest centered by a carved grotesque mask with a pronounced nose, curled mustache, and ornamental headdress. The mask is surrounded by deeply carved acanthus foliage, scrolling forms, and a beaded outer border. The solid oak seats feature recessed panels and rounded edges, supported by four turned and tapered legs.

The expressive masks and elaborate foliage draw from the decorative vocabulary of the Italian Renaissance, which experienced a significant revival in European furniture design during the 19th century.

Both chairs retain their warm aged patina, visible oak grain, and signs of age and use, including surface wear and separations, consistent with their antique character. Offered as a pair.
