An evocative mid-19th-century ambrotype portrait of a gentleman, preserved within its original thermoplastic Union case. The image, housed under glass and framed by an intricately pressed gilt brass mat, rests opposite a rich burgundy velvet liner with embossed scrollwork.

Union cases—crafted from a blend of shellac and wood fiber—were prized in the 1850s and 1860s for their sculptural beauty and durability. This example features a raised decorative design on the exterior, typical of early American casework by makers such as Littlefield, Parsons & Co. or Samuel Peck & Co.

A hauntingly beautiful relic of Victorian portraiture, where the stillness of early photography meets the quiet intimacy of memory.
