Antique Neoclassical Pink Alabaster Lotus Lamp with Ram-Head Mounts

A wonderfully unusual antique table lamp combining carved pink alabaster with an architectural, classically inspired metal mount. The luminous alabaster shade is carved as a stylized open lotus or flower, with individually defined petals and beautiful natural variations of rose pink, blush, cream, and darker veining throughout the stone.

The shade is supported by an elaborate tripod-form patinated metal frame, decorated with sculptural ram heads and long classical supports terminating in hoofed feet. Ram-head ornament was widely used in Neoclassical and Empire-inspired decorative arts, making the mount a particularly striking counterpoint to the softly carved floral shade.

The lamp rests on a substantial circular pink alabaster plinth that beautifully echoes the coloration of the shade. When illuminated, the translucency of the stone gives the flower a soft glow and emphasizes its natural veining.
