19th-Century Italian Madonna and Child with Saint John, After Raphael

Antique oil on wood panel, likely Italian, depicting the Madonna and Child with the infant Saint John the Baptist, based on Raphael’s celebrated Madonna of the Meadow composition of 1505–1506. In Raphael’s design, the standing Christ Child reaches toward the cross held by the kneeling young Saint John, a detail associated with Christ’s future Passion.

The painting is executed on a solid wood panel with a painted deep burgundy surround and a raised beaded border framing the central image. The pastoral landscape and figural arrangement closely follow the Renaissance prototype while reflecting a later devotional copy tradition.
