Large 19th-century oil on canvas portrait by German artist Gustav Adolph Spangenberg (1828–1891), signed and dated 1859 lower right.

The sitter is likely Betty Paoli (1814–1894), the Austrian poet, journalist, translator and literary critic.

Presented in its large period giltwood frame. The reverse retains a conservation label documenting that the painting was cleaned in May 2003 and relined with BEVA 371.
