Late 19th Century French Louis XV Revival Semainier (Tall Chest of Drawers)
Regular price $800.00 Sale price $550.00 Save $250.00A French semainier (tall chest of drawers), dating to the late 19th century, circa 1880–1900, executed in the Louis XV Revival style. The chest is constructed in fine hardwoods with a serpentine (bombé) front, showcasing carefully matched veneers arranged to emphasize the natural grain pattern.
The piece features six graduated drawers, each outlined with brass string inlay, creating a continuous decorative framework across the façade. The drawer fronts are fitted with original small brass knobs, restrained in scale and appropriate to the refined character of the form. The sides are finished with inlaid rectangular panels, indicating the cabinet was intended to be viewed in the round rather than placed strictly against a wall.
The shaped top follows the curvature of the case below and is similarly bordered with brass stringing. The chest stands on elegant cabriole legs, consistent with Louis XV revival design, giving the piece a light, vertical presence despite its height.
The surface retains a rich, warm patina, with subtle variations in tone and grain consistent with age and quality workmanship. The overall proportions, inlay work, and construction align with French decorative furniture produced in the late 19th century, particularly pieces made for refined domestic interiors.
Traditionally used as a semainier or lingerie chest, this form was designed for organizing garments or personal effects and remains well suited today for bedroom or dressing-room use.
