Artist Information

Hamilton Hamilton was born in Oxford, England in 1847 and became an American painter and etcher known for landscapes, portraits, illustrations, and figural scenes. His family immigrated to New York when he was a child, and he later spent much of his life connected to Connecticut. The Burchfield Penney Art Center notes that he often incorporated young women in his scenes, modeled after his twin daughters.

He was largely self-taught, studied briefly in Paris, worked as an illustrator and portraitist, and became especially known for his landscape work, including his Colorado and American West scenes. He was made a full member of the National Academy of Design in 1889, which explains the “N.A.” designation often found with his name.
