Exceptional antique English Victorian desk inkwell by the renowned London luxury maker Betjemann & Sons, circa 1860. The piece features a beautifully figured coromandel base, prized in the 19th century for its dramatic dark brown and black striping, richly complemented by ornate ormolu mounts and delicate hand-painted porcelain cherub medallions.
At the center sits a removable cut crystal inkwell with a gilt metal lid, also inset with a hand-painted porcelain medallion. The circular coromandel plate is decorated with four matching porcelain plaques, each framed in Gothic-inspired ormolu mounts with raised stud detailing. The underside retains a green felt center.
A refined and highly decorative Victorian writing accessory, beautifully suited for a library, writing desk, cabinet of curiosities, or collected antique display. Elegant, romantic, and finely made, this piece reflects the quality and inventiveness associated with Betjemann & Sons’ luxury desk and cabinet wares.
