Oil on canvas, signed “M. P.” (M. v. Parmentier), c. 1870–1880.

A cabinet-format genre study of a standing man in rustic winter dress—felt hat with feather, fur-trimmed coat and muffler—painted in a restrained, earthy palette with quick, descriptive impasto in the fur and a dry-brushed, neutral ground that throws the silhouette forward.

On the reverse is a period inscription in German identifying the artist—“Maria Parmentier; aus dem Nachlasse der Künstlerin gekauft im Künstlerhaus, Wien, Jänner 1881” (purchased from the artist’s estate at the Vienna Künstlerhaus, January 1881), with a purchaser’s signature. 

Vienna-born painter; studied with Emil Jakob Schindler and later Charles-François Daubigny; exhibited at the Vienna Künstlerhaus and Paris Salons; died in Trespiano near Florence in 1879.

Works of Maria Parmentier are held in several museums in France, Austria and Germany.
